Practical implementation of Circular Economy in an Urban Context: Environmental Communication in the Haus der Materialisierung

Guided by ideas of waste reduction and a circular, resource-efficient economy, a group of initiatives has come together to establish the first multidisciplinary urban center for circular economic activity in Berlin: the Haus der Materialisierung (HdM). As a pioneer user in the urban development model project "Haus der Statistik" (https://hausderstatistik.org/), the HdM has found a temporary home in the heart of Berlin, near Alexanderplatz. During the planning and construction phase (2019-2022) of the "Haus der Statistik", the HdM will test various circular economy concepts in the practice.

The HdM represents a unique and symbolic applied laboratory to research, test and document new approaches to establish circular economy practices, helping to network and communicate their results in the context of innovative urban development.

During this project, the project partners will help develop the internal and external communication channels, enabling a network of circular economy actors to engage in the HdM activities. Additionally the project will develop digital tools to help track the quantity, quality and environmental impact of the materials recovered. The aim is to achieve a leap in innovation and professionalization from everyday practical cooperation to self-sustaining business models for circular economy. This is expected to increase the impact, acceptance and long-term sustainability of such activities.

Over the project duration of three years, the development processes as well as the organization and functioning of the center will be documented as a model project in the HdS (AP1). The research and communication work focuses on three commercial material flows with relevant volume potential, but also high innovation potential for product development (AP2). A digital inventory tool will be developed to record the sources, quantities, and qualities of the targeted secondary material flows, while helping to offer the materials to wider markets and promote their use in new production (AP3). The tool will support the acquisition and marketing of material and enable the environmental evaluation of the activities (WP4). The demonstration character of the project is supported by regular opening hours, open tours, events and practical workshops (AP5). In this way, the project contributes to the dissemination of circular economic practices and ideas, helping to make reuse in the field of commercial waste a mainstream activity, thus contributing to waste prevention in the State of Berlin (AP6).

Project work packages (as seen in diagramm):

WP1: Establishment of the HdM as a model project

WP2: Used material warehouse for selected material flows

WP3: Digital inventory tool for used material warehouse and online shop

WP4: Environmental analysis

WP5: Material specific workshop events

WP6: Integrating the network activities to local waste management practices
