Title

STRAMENTO - Demonstration of an innovative process for the efficient production of biogas and fertilizer from grain straw - sub-project 2 regional and spatial assessments

Duration

February 2020 – February 2023

Project description

The aim of "Stramento" ( lat. made from straw) is to achieve an integrated energy and nutrient use of lignocellulose-rich agricultural residues through an innovative biogas process and thus to sustainably reduce greenhouse gas and nutrient emissions as well as improve soil functions in addition to providing biogas and fermentation residue substrates. The project is carried out in close cooperation between the project partners Herbst Umwelttechnik GmbH and the Technische Universität Berlin (Department of Circular Economy and Recycling Technology).

Based on the patent-pending process for the fermentation of rice straw, a process is to be developed within the framework of this R&D project, which can also be used to convert domestic cereal straw into biogas. The core of the project is the construction and operation of a pilot plant using grain straw as the primary substrate. Stable operation over 14 months shall determine the efficiency of the plant with other approaches, according to the Methodenbuch "Stoffstromorientierte Bilanzierung der Klimagaseffekte". Besides, various options with fermentation residue treatment and refinement will be investigated and evaluated against conventional methods regarding energy demand, emissions, and product quality. In addition to pure process development, extensive accompanying research is carried out to enable a rapid and sustainable market launch of the Stramento-approach. Data on properties and potentials of cereal straw and other lignocellulosic biomass as well as potential co-substrates are quantified for a model region and made publicly accessible. The contribution of the approach towards climate protection and reduction of nutrient surpluses in agriculture will be quantified. A plant concept with standardized, modular units will be developed for the further market launch of the process. Furthermore, the process has a high potential to be applied to other lignocellulosic agricultural residues.
