Waste to Energy Processes

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Susanne Rotter, M.Sc. Daniela Moloeznik
Lecture Waste to Energy
Course 0333 L 540

course language: english

  • Status of Waste to Energy in Waste Management
  • Physicochemical principles of incineration, drying, pyrolysis, and gasification
  • Process and operational units description of thermal waste treatment.
  • Emissions Control, flue gas cleaning and residues treatment.
  • Secondary recovered fuel production from waste
  • Energy use and co-incineration in industry
Exercise Waste energy utilization
Lehrveranstaltung 0333 L541

course language: english

By using the energy stored in waste, waste management in Germany contributes to climate and resource protection. Waste-to-Energy also includes energy recovery of substitute fuels as biogas and biomass. In this exercise, basic principles are laid down for the interpretation and evaluation of energetic exploitation measures::
  • Incineration calculations (process parameters calculations as air amount, temperature, energy recovered, efficiency)
  • Water-vapor cycles (Rankine cycle)
  • Energy Balances for different treatments drying, incineration, biogas
  • CO2-Balances for the assessment of climate change (CO2 calculations and comparisons)
  • Profitability analysis for waste-to-energy projects

Waste practical analytical lab

Supplementary module
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Susanne Rotter, M.Sc. Daniela Moloeznik
Course 0333 L 403
2 x 2 SWS PR = 4 SWS (2 x 3 ECTS = 6 ECTS)
ATTENTION: from WiSe 2017/2018 and on the first and second part are done together and they take place one after another in the lapse of two weeks.. The laboratory course will take place from 02.03.2020 to the 14.03.2020. Deadline for registration is on the 01.02.2020 Seminars already take place one week earlier!

Part 1 - Fuel characterization

In Part 1 from the practical waste lab an overview of waste analysis is given, specially for important terms in the area of thermal waste treatment.
 Main topics include:
  • Sample taking and representativity
  • Waste, refuse derived fuels and biomass as fuel characterization
  • Quality assurance of refuse derived fuels
  • Statistical analysis and interpretation

Part 2 - Disposal criteria and compost quality assurance

  • Evaluate the parameters to landfill or recycle pre-treated waste
  • Compost quality criteria
Course materials and dates are available in ISIS2
Just one part can be also chosen (each one 3 ECTS).

The two laboratory practical works are optimal supplementary modules for Waste to energy and Biological processes and landfill technology.
