VERA SUSANNE ROTTER, holds a degree in Environmental Engineering. She worked from 1997-2002 as an assistant professor at the University of Technology Dresden (Germany). In her doctoral thesis she investigated the presence of heavy metals in domestic solid waste and their distribution during mechanical processing.

After working for the German Technical Control Board (TÜV) in Hannover (Germany) in the field of process control in nuclear power plants and radio­active waste treatment she became, in 2003, junior professor for Solid Waste Management at Berlin Technical University. In 2009, she was visiting professor at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, The Netherlands. In In 2010, she got appointed as full professor at the TU Berlin for Solid Waste Management (since 2016: Circular Economy and Recycling Technology).

Her main fields of research are on product-centric recovery strategies and recycling technologies. She is appointed member of the expert panel “R2- Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency” (R2- Innovative Technologien für Ressourcen Effizienz) for the German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). In 2009 and 2011 she was invited participant of the working group on Recycling of International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management, under the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and contributed to two reports “Recycling Rates of Metals” and “Metal Recycling: Opportunities, Limits, Infrastructure”.  In 2013 and 2015, she joined the European Delegation of the 5th EU-US-Japan Conference on Critical Raw Materials in Brussels and Tokyo.

Currently, Vera Susanne Rotter is principal investigator in several research projects addressing critical materials recovery from Waste Electronic and Electric Equipment, Batteries, and Photovoltaic systems. Other projects address holistic strategies for residual biomass management, energy recovery from biomass and mitigation strategies for greenhouse gases.

Moreover, Vera Susanne contributes annually to waste related short courses for an international audience courses e.g. at UNESCO-IHE and shares an interest in knowledge management, online learning and modern didactical tools.
